I’m always amazed when I start to see sprouts from the seeds I sowed just a couple weeks earlier. Honestly, I get a little geeked out. As I spray the garden with a light mist of water regularly, I’ve been known to talk to the sprouts in an unusual voice. This happened yesterday and Mac was right behind me without me knowing. In between squirts, I heard him tell Caroline “Mom gets really weird with her garden.”
I had to laugh at myself, because really, it’s true. It’s the same voice I use when I tell the dog that he’s a good boy. Whatever the case, I talk to my garden.
Almost all of the plants have sprouted and soon I’ll need to transplant the beans and sugar snaps into larger pots until I can plant them in the ground, which is looking more like the end of May this year. We’ve suffered a little drama in the garden over the winter. We have to go back to square one.
Old man winter wasn’t so kind to the garden. High winds made their mark on the fencing and the garden door. Though we knew the railroad ties we used were only temporary; and we were thrilled with the three years they gave us, yet they have given way to the harsh season and now look like this:
Sad trombone.
In all fairness, I had made plans for a garden redesign this year, and I guess I can say that the winter season helped me out and offered the guarantee that the garden redesign project will happen. So, this week I’ll be taking down, cleaning up, and starting with a clean slate.
This design inspires me.
As does this one.
Might implement a few elements from this garden as well.
Lots of projects going on around here, several open ended. But, our garden redesign is certainly on the front burner.

Love it, and I love your inspiration shots. Excited to see what you come up with!

I’ve been reading your column since my wife began telling me about it. So now she has me making plans to put in a garden with a surrounding structure. Our problem is deer. I’ve been told to put a string around your garden and put mothballs in old bobbie socks. The mothballs keep rejuvenating every time it rains or you water. I’ll keep you posted.
