Things have been pretty hectic around here and have been for a few months. That’s just life, I suppose. So many open-ended projects, tight deadlines and spring sports have me a bit frazzled and a new Taxi sign lighted on the top of my car. Go with the flow, I tell myself, but my eyes seem to have missed that memo.
I’ve been very fortunate in my life and I can count on one finger the amount of times I’ve had bags under my eyes, but let me tell ya, when I finally did succomb to these said bags, that party arrived in full force.
I woke myself up in the night rubbing my eyes. They burned and itched like there was no tomorrow. I got up, splashed them with cold water and went back to bed, never turning on a light. The next morning, I looked in the mirror and I swear I saw Quasimodo looking back at me, begging for a glass of water. Good God my eyes were red and puffy.
All of these questions started coming across my mind like a ticker tape. OMG, is this age? Am I allergic to my pillow? Did I consume too much sodium or eat something I may have developed an allergy to? How in the world did my eyes get this bad? So I popped a Claritin and went into damage control.
I went online, natch, to find some DIY remedies for red, puffy eyes and the first thing that came up with to put cold green tea bags on the eyes for 15 minutes or until the tea bags have warmed, then replace with new, cold tea bags. Seemed easy enough and luckily, I had some on hand.
So I did it.
Felt a little weird.
Maybe even burned just a tiny bit.
After the allotted time, I took off the tea bags and looked in the mirror again. Now, I had tea stained puffy eyes. This trick didn’t help me – didn’t get the same result as so many others swear by. On to remedy #2. Cucumbers.
What’s the harm, I thought. I see pictures of people with cucumbers on their eyes all the time in magazines. So I cut up a couple slices, laid back down and plopped them on my eyes and waited for time to take it’s course.
The next thing I knew, Mac was standing over me, totally puzzled. Of course he would be. He’s a boy, and one that is just shy of 13. And then he asks me:
“Mommy, why do you have salad on your eyes?”
“Good question, Sweet Boy” I said. “My eyes are red and puffy, and I’ve read that cucumbers help take this away.”
“That seems silly,” he said. “How about just putting a bag of frozen corn on your eyes instead?”
Food for food, I thought. Maybe he’s on to something.
Truth be told, the cucumbers did help relieve my red, puffy eyes. This remedy, I do recommend. And to entertain Mac’s suggestion, I followed up with a bag of frozen corn. The corn sealed the deal.
I’m still not sure what caused my eye drama, but a little salad sure did relieve the red and puffy.
