When we were in contract for our farmhouse, I put together an inspirational binder with dividers for each room in our house. I put my favorite magazine tears in there, along with fabric samples and paint swatches. Under the Dining Room section, I had a few pictures of chandeliers that I liked, and hoped to some day have one of them.
Well the day came a few months ago. I found a chandelier at one of my favorite haunts, and said to myself “Self, this is the one.” And it was in my price range to boot. Done.
I envisioned drum-style lamp shades for this chandelier, and found them. I covered them in this French striped fabric that I had purchased when I was working on the inspirational binder. I finished the edges with coordinating ribbon.
But, let me back up a minute. My husband is an Electrician. Comes in very handy around here – so much so, that I don’t think twice about buying a lamp at a thrift shop that needs rewiring. He’s taught me a lot. I can pretty much rewire a lamp myself, and can almost install a dimmer switch by myself, although it is safest if he is standing by.
Certainly, one thing that is completely OUT of my league and so IN my husband’s league, is running electric and installing a chandelier.
So when I bought said chandelier, luckily he liked it (not that he had a ton of say in the matter), and he said he would be happy to install it, and make all necessary electrical whatevers involved. Whew!
But no matter where I put said chandelier, my point wasn’t getting across. The darn thing wasn’t getting installed, but rather stepped over. Everyone started treating said chandelier like those huge dust bunnies that float across the floor – “I didn’t see anything..”
First, said chandelier was on the dining room floor. Then it was moved to the living room.
Since it was in the spot where we put our Christmas tree, we just moved it over a few feet. Then, we had a small holiday cocktail party, and it got moved to the top of the stairs. Got tripped on up there. Had to get moved. Again.
Said chandelier then made it all the way into the guest bed room. NO GOOD.
These subtleties weren’t working. It just got stepped over and / or moved. it was like said husband never really saw said chandelier.
I then took matters into my own hands. If I want this thing up, subtleties were / are not the answer. So, this is what I did:
What do you think? Still too subtle?
Stay tuned…

One thing that always works for me is to say "Honey, I would like you to do XYZ today." Amazingly, it almost always gets done pronto. I think spelling it out is the key!

Ouch! This reminds me of the chandelier I will soon need to replace—it’s a pair of mica boxes on a T-bar of brass that uses (er, used) 60-watt incandescent bulbs on a dimmer. I tried ‘dimmable’ CFLs but, ah, NO, they don’t dim. So a new fixture is in the offing…soon as my last pack of Soft-Whites go away. ☺
Brooke Fedigan says
Mark,
Don’t give up on those soft whites!! They will never fully go away. While I’m thinking about it, how about considering a fixture using Edison bulbs?! Those fixtures are always classic, and always make a statement!!
Best,
Brooke
