I have received several emails asking me if I made baby food for Mac and Caroline, and if so, would I write a post about such.
The answers are Yes, and Absolutely.
I made baby food for a few reasons:
- The jarred stuff tastes nasty. If I think it tastes nasty, then the baby will too.
- Too many hidden ingredients in the jarred stuff.
- You prepare it, you know what’s in it.
- Cost. A bigger bang for your buck when you make your own baby food.
Many will argue that they simply don’t have time, but I’m here to tell you that it is not all that time-consuming to make baby food. Here is how I make baby food:
Pick out the fruits and vegetables that you would like to prepare. Fresh is always best, but certainly don’t be afraid to use frozen. Boil the vegetable until softened. Reserve 1/4 cup of vegetable water, then drain vegetable. Add to food processor and process until smooth. Add reserved water as needed to make pureed mixture as smooth as possible. Divide mixture into small containers; I used 2 ounce containers that are freezer safe. I found them at the Dollar Store.
For fruits, puree in food processor and immediately keep in refrigerator until time to eat. Fruits don’t keep as long as vegetables, so keep this in mind. Apple sauce does come in a “natural, no sugar added” form, and this is the kind I gave to Mac and Caroline. I recommend mashing bananas with a fork at time of serving.
It looks a little intimidating but really, once you get going, it is so satisfying. I always felt in control knowing that I made Mac and Caroline’s baby food, and felt I had a good handle on their diet.
Now, about those chicken nuggets I have in the freezer….

Amen!! I despise jarred baby food…bleeech!! It’s so easy just to make yourself. Except I put my purées in ice cube trays until frozen and then ziplock baggies and baam you have nice 1oz portions to mix and match as desired.
