So, Sean’s got this Uncle……
Uncle John….
And Uncle John owns a huge storage facility. Like, the biggest I’ve ever seen, kind of storage facility.
Uncle John stores Broadway show sets and lights. He rents space for world renowned designer fabric houses. And, he has smaller storage units for common folk like me. Once a year, when some common folk abandon their storage units, Uncle John uses that to his advantage, and hosts an estate sale.
The event is in the fall, and I always look forward to his sales. And, lucky for me, Uncle John calls me and invites me to take a peek at everything a couple days before the sale opens. This year was no different.
As I was walking though the huge warehouse, I found this gem. This buffet that was missing its drawers, was hidden in a dark corner, tucked behind a tall mound of faux fruit. Lucky for me, I have a flashlight on my phone.
I had that thing strapped on top of my car before Sean could say the Hail Mary. This buffet was absolutely coming home with us. And you’d think, after all these years, that Sean would stop shaking his head and asking me “why the heck would you want that??”
And when I told him that my plans were to refinish this tired buffet, and have it live in our den – well, there was no way he could comprehend such a notion.
So, when Sean was at work, I got to work myself. I cut the legs down on this buffet. I sanded the entire surface, and I was meticulous on every detail.
I primed and painted the bottom part, and I stained the top with 6 coats of walnut colored stain.
This rag of a buffet was turning into a rich buffet.
As I was paying attention to all the detail, and painting with the steadiest of hands, I was visioning all those random dvd’s being neatly placed on one side. The cable box, wii, dvd player, and apple tv all being neatly stowed on the shelves. And, still having one side left to occupy just, whatevs.
What a heavenly thought.
A piece of furniture that could tidy up the busyness of a den.
Yes, please.
And here she is. The rags to riches buffet.
Found in a dark corner, now is the home to multiple things, and lives in the pulse, off the pulse, of our home.
It’s amazing how one piece of furniture could bring such energy to the kids, and such calm to this Mama.
Thank you, Uncle John.
