The holidays are all about festivities and family.
And baking.
Just as you have made your grocery list for everything you need to make those scrumptious morsels, it’s highly likely that your list contains many of the same ingredients as everyone else.
Eggs. Cake flour. Buttermilk. The list goes on. Grocery stores, this time of year, are helter-skelter.
So if you’re out of cake flour, or buttermilk, or eggs, and you can’t bare to make another trip to the store, or make the random walk to your neighbor to ask for that much needed egg, I have three genius substitute solutions for you today.
Enter today’s Quick Tip Friday.
No egg? No problem.
All you need to do is make a cornstarch paste. Thoroughly mix together 3 Tablespoons cold water and 1 Tablespoon cornstarch. This is the thickening agent needed, and is the perfect substitute for an egg. No egg on your face with this substitute.
Is the grocery store out of buttermilk, or you only need a cup and don’t feel like buying a quart? I hear ya. Here’s your solution:
Milk and lemon juice. Combine 1 cup milk and 1 Tablespoon lemon juice. Let stand for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, mix together well and now you have the cup of buttermilk you needed. Winner winner chicken dinner.
And then there’s cake flour. I’m not really a baker – which means, I really only bake during the holidays. So the likeliness of cake flour being in my pantry are slim. And, yes, I went to put a box in my buggy and there was none to be had in the store. Wha Wha.
Here’s the solution:
3 cups all purpose flour. 6 Tablespoons cornstarch.
Here’s what you do: For every 1 cup of flour, remove 2 Tablespoons of flour. Now add 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch for every 1 cup of flour. (replacing the tablespoons of flour taken out). Sift 5-6 times and now you have your cake flour.
So there you go. 3 easy substitute solutions for your holiday baking.
Cheers!
