The Quick and Easy Way To Make Christmas Stockings

As the children were nestled, all snug in their beds…

I was lying awake listening to an owl.

Now normally, when I’m lying in bed trying to go to sleep, but can’t because of certain noises (snoring) keeping me awake, I am frustrated.  Then, naturally, the thought of sleep gets tossed out the window.

But last night was different.  I was fascinated at the hoots of the owl, and became really interested in trying to figure out what kind of owl was perched in the tree right outside our bedroom window.

It sounded like this:  hoo-h’HOO-hoo-hoo.

So, I  did what any other curious person would do – I grabbed my iPad and I googled the hoot pattern.  I found all kinds of information and played all kinds of audio.  (Luckily, Sean’s a heavy sleeper and slept though all of the owl songs I was playing.)

According to my ears and google, our owl guest in the tree was a Great Horned Owl.   I had to have listened to it for over an hour.  It was kind of soothing, listening to this owl, and maybe in a way, I was comforted that this owl was keeping me company as I lie there awake.  And for one rare instance, being awake in the middle of the night didn’t bother me.  And yes, I did entertain opening the window and asking it how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop….

Here is how to make stockings from old sweaters.

I picked up three sweaters from Goodwill for $9.  I drew a stocking pattern, cut it out and fit it on top of each sweater.

Using the pattern as my guide, I cut out the stocking shape, leaving the neck to be the opening for the stockings.  I turned the sweater so the “inside was out” and I sewed around the edges.

I turned it right-side out and presto.  I had a stocking.  I did the same thing two more times, and now I have three.

Such an quick and easy way to make your own Christmas stockings.  And it was fun.  I cranked out these three stockings in about 30 minutes.  Not bad for a half hour and $9.  These stockings didn’t look so fashionable as sweaters, but they sure do look cute as stockings.

Maybe that’s what they were intended to be anyway.  Wink.
