Ever wonder the secret how to keep tulips alive longer? Here’s a great quick tip for you to follow to keep these blooms around longer.
Spring is finally here and I’m seeing tulips popping up everywhere from online flower farmers to even in the grocery stores. I love their pops of color, and I’ve been buying and arranging tulips all over the place.
As with all flowers, we want our cheery arrangements to stick around for as long as we can, so I follow a couple great tips to keep tulips from drooping over, and to prolong the life of cut flowers.
How To Keep Tulips Alive Longer
The secret lies in two unexpected ingredients that you most likely have on hand. One lives in your coin purse, and one in your laundry room. I’m talking about a penny and bleach. Here’s how they hold the key to tulip longevity:
Place a penny on the bottom of the vase with water. This keeps the tulips from drooping. Sounds silly, but this tip seriously works!
Mix a tablespoon of bleach in with the water. This keeps the water clear, and prevents new bacteria from growing, hence prolonging the life of your flowers. And, the best part about this tip is that it not only works for tulips, but also in most flower arrangements. Certainly a practice that I follow with each flower bouquet I have displayed in our home. A tip that just takes a minute to do, and one that should be practiced with every flower arrangement.
One of my favorite books where I’ve learned so many of my favorite floral tips, is this one. It’s a gorgeous book filled with wonderful ideas and inspiration, all about flowers.
By following this tip, you can prolong the life of your bouquets, and tiptoe through the tulips for a little longer.
Do you live in cooler climates where flowers won’t start blooming until May? Well, I have a great tip here, how to force blooms from bulbs. Check it out!

Thanks Brooke. I like to get fresh flowers on Fridays before spending the weekend-Monday in the theatre. This week I’ll get tulips & use your hints!

Laura, let me know how it worked. I tried it in some of my tulips but not all and it did seem to make a difference.
