I’m always looking for ways to ward off slugs and other pests from my garden, and keep them from eating my prized crop. Planting certain kinds of flowers around certain vegetables does help, but I’m always wondering what I can do in addition.
Trying to multi task the other morning, I was drinking my coffee and running a bag of vegetable scraps out to my compost, when I started to wonder if my left over coffee grounds would be of benefit to the compost and to my garden. I googled my question and it turns out, there’s loads of information and benefits to coffee in the garden.
Enter today’s Quick Tip Friday.
Turns out, spreading coffee grounds around the garden does keep the snails and slugs away. They don’t like the caffeine and it has a negative effect on them. Hey, they like their slow lifestyle. So, keep their sluggish pace out of your garden by spreading around coffee grounds! Pun intended.
I read that used coffee grounds spread around the garden is also a cat repellent. Spread grounds around the soil and this will keep the neighbor’s cat from using your garden beds as a litter box. Major plus, right there.
Keeping with the coffee grounds, fresh work well around some plants, too. Acid loving plants such as azaleas, hydrangeas, blueberries welcome the addition. Good to know! I have all of these in my gardens. Sprinkle fresh grounds around those plants to add acid into the soil, and help these plants thrive. And, while you’re at it, go ahead and add some grounds to your compost!
Do use some caution when spreading these coffee grounds. Tomato plants aren’t fans of the grounds, so don’t mix the two.
Turns out, coffee and gardening go hand in hand. Most of your plants welcome the pick me up just as much as you do.

My cat read this and quickly sprays on my key borad. So nest spring I will try to plant key boards and sell them at the farmers market. Great suggestion.
