I’ve been slowly cleaning our porches and getting them ready for warmer weather. This past winter was unlike any other – our back porch was used as a workshop / storage / dumping ground for, well, you name it. As I was putting away, throwing out, recycling, I made my way to this tired bench.
It had lived on our kitchen porch for a few years, then when weather took its course, we moved it to the back porch, hidden in a corner and saved only because we need the seating occasionally. I threw away the two busted and mangled pillows that we were saving for God knows why, and was pondering how I was going to take it apart to fit it in the recycle bin. As I was just about to take my first jab, my paint can light bulb when off. Of course it did. If I could scrape and paint this thing, I thought, and by another season…
I had Mac help me move it to a working spot (off the back porch, mind you) and I started scraping. And scraping. Wasn’t that hard, but as most of the paint was begging to come off, pretty much the entire bench turned naked. A light sand and cleaning and it was ready to paint.
A coat of primer first; always the rule, then two coats of white paint. Far from looking like new, but I do think I was able to buy one more season out of this bench.
