I have the most amazing project to share that you can do too! Here is the DIY Ralph Lauren inspired table project using faux cowhide fabric.
I love a good table transformation, don’t you? This project goes far beyond just paint. With the addition of an upholstered top, this table top is transformed into a classic and chic Ralph Lauren inspired home design.
Whenever I begin a big room remodel and refresh, there are always additional projects that fall into place. Whether small or slightly larger in scale, several projects within the main, are almost always required. Not that I mind; not in the least, because it’s these smaller designs within a big one, that feed my soul.
Case in point: our bedside tables.
I inherited these tables from my Aunt Dot. She had each one under a window, and when she would entertain a crowd, these half moon tables would cap each end of her dining room table. So, when she passed away at the ripe old age of 97, these two made their way across the country to me here in New York. They’ve been multi-functional since I’ve had them, even taking a sabbatical in our attic for a spell. When Sean and I moved our primary bedroom to its current location, they came out of hiding and became our bedside tables. I painted them white and thought they they were the bees knees.
For about 5 minutes.
Thing is, nothing about our previous primary bedroom design was worth a flip. Dark navy walls and white painted furniture with a hand-me-down rug where the core of it all. We hid a huge hole in the rug under the bed which was not the least bit ideal.
Sad trombone.
Out With The Old, In With The New
With a new, classic color pallet and a few surprise key design elements, I was able to also focus my attention on these tables. I wanted to really transform them following a true traditional and chic design, and I got all of my inspiration from the pages of this Ralph Lauren book.
Classic and elegant-made-simple design, Ralph Lauren’s style brings an unexpected twist to traditional. This is exactly what I wanted for these bedside tables. His style is old Hollywood mixed with Montana ranch. And, since I lived in Montana for 10 years, why not bring that element into my own home. Let me follow this inspiration. I wanted to bring an animal element to these tables.
Hides abound, yet I can’t bring myself to having the real deal in my home. However, faux is fabulous, especially when you find the perfect faux. And I did, right here with this beautiful faux cowhide fabric.
DIY Ralph Lauren Inspired Table
Though it doesn’t make sense to upholster an entire table, legs and all, adding fabric to a table top certainly does. It’s chic, it’s modern, and it’s classic design all rolled into one. And, with the addition of a strip of upholstery tacks, you’re so golden. No math involved. Here are the supplies you’ll need:
- faux cowhide fabric
- upholstery tack strips plus tacks
- power stapler (I would be completely lost without mine)
- T50 staples
- fabric scissors
- small hammer
Start by laying the fabric wrong side up on the floor. Turn the table upside down so the top is on the fabric. Cut the fabric around the table, leaving a three inch allowance around the entire table.
Using the power stapler, start on one side and staple the fabric, securing on the underside of the table. Then, start to the back, pulling the fabric as taunt as possible, and then staple. Repeat this process with both sides.
Using the fabric scissors, follow the outline of the table and cut the excess fabric off. Staple any excess or draping fabric.
Turn table over and stand on its legs. Starting on the edge of the table, hammer the upholstery tack strip with a tack, making sure the strip is even. Secure the strip around the entire circumference of the table.
Use a lint roller to remove all fuzz and excess fibers. Trim any excess fabric as needed.
What’s great about this DIY, is that these Ralph Lauren inspired tables are great design for all rooms of your home, not just the bedroom. A faux cowhide upholstered table is timeless now matter where it lands in the home. And, the DIY takes less than an hour, yet creates timeless designs.
Let this DIY Ralph Lauren inspired table design inspire your interior home design. It will bring classic yet modern and unexpected details to your home decor designs. And the best thing? This DIY takes less than an hour and looks like it took hours to complete. Isn’t that the kind of design that we’re all after?
Yes. Yes of course.

That looks lovely! I’ve never seen faux cowhide. Does it actually have fur-like texture or is it smooth like a vinyl?
Brooke Fedigan says
Thank you Sara! It does have a fur-like texture. It looks real, but is fabric. It was very easy to work with as well.
