Frozen yogurt vs. frozen custard: What’s the difference? I’m going to dive into everything, and share a favorite froyo recipe too.
There are so many frozen treats options to choose from whether it’s ice cream, gelato, or frozen yogurt. Although they all have some similarities, there are a few differences. I’m going to go over everything, and share all of the delicious facts. I’m also including one of our favorite frozen yogurt recipes, too.

I love to make homemade ice cream. It’s our favorite summertime treat to enjoy around here, and I always have it on hand in the freezer. Heck, homemade ice cream is one of the reasons why we started to raise chickens; because fresh eggs are best. Recently, for health and dietary reasons, I’ve turned to making homemade frozen yogurt. Though I was apprehensive at first, I set out to create recipes with that coveted creamier texture as ice cream, but with the healthier option of lower fat content and a lower sugar content. However, before I even stepped into the test kitchen, I wanted to research the differences between frozen yogurt vs. the standard ice cream that I’m accustomed to making. I wanted to make sure that even with a lower fat content, frozen yogurt wouldn’t skimp on flavor.

I did my research and found the answers. I also created the most delicious Blueberry Frozen Yogurt Bars recipe that you’ll love, and will make time and time again over the summer. Plus, this sweet treat is a healthier alternative to the higher fat content ice creams that you get at your local ice cream shop.
Let’s get started!
What Is Frozen Custard?

Frozen custard is a type of ice cream that is made from the base ingredients of egg yolks, cream and sugar. It is far denser than a standard ice cream (which is made with eggs, cream, milk and sugar) and has a creamy texture and a richer flavor. Frozen custard can be made with either chicken eggs, or if an even richer, more velvety texture is desired, then duck eggs make for a fabulous option (and with a (higher fat content) too.
What Is Frozen Yogurt?

Frozen yogurt is a type of ice cream made with the main ingredient of yogurt, along with milk and sugar. This is a frozen dairy dessert that is made with yogurt rather than creams or milk and has a tangy flavor. Some recipes go through the same churning process as standard ice cream, while with other recipes, the ingredients are blended together and then frozen in the freezer. Quick and easy, just like the recipe I’m sharing below.
Frozen Yogurt vs. Frozen Custard: What Is The Difference?

Frozen custard and frozen yogurt contain the same ingredients as ice cream, with one major difference. The main difference is that frozen yogurt doesn’t use eggs. Unlike ice cream, frozen yogurt incorporates cultured milk, or yogurt. The fat content of the milk largely determines how much overall fat is in the final product. Both can contain fresh fruits and even a small amount of fruit juice, along with however much sugar that is added, depending on the recipe you’re following. Custard requires a warmer temperature to cook on the stove to thicken the mixture to be able to churn in an ice cream machine. There is no cooking involved when making frozen yogurt. Unless, you’re making your own yogurt. But that’s an entirely other post and out of my wheelhouse.
Is Regular Yogurt Healthier Than Frozen?

Frozen yogurt actually contains more nutrients than regular yogurt, making it healthier. Frozen yogurt contains a healthy dose of vitamins, including vitamin C, and minerals that help to keep you healthy, along with allowing good gut health as well. Having said this, frozen yogurt is a healthier option than regular yogurt and fat-free yogurt.
Which Is Healthier? Frozen Yogurt or Frozen Custard?

Is frozen yogurt healthier than ice cream? Yes, it is. Frozen custard has higher calories than ice cream (320) and frozen yogurt (244). Frozen custard, on the other hand, contains 8 g of protein per cup. Yogurt contains 140 calories, compared to 160 for low-fat ice cream and 280 for standard ice cream. Here’s another interesting key difference: Soft serve ice cream contains roughly 191 calories. So, by the looks of the numbers, the froyo is winning in the lower calorie, healthier category.
Is Soft Serve Ice Cream Made The Same As Frozen Yogurt?
Both use dairy and sugar, although ice cream is made with cream, and frozen yogurt uses cultured milk. Ice cream tends to be fluffier, while frozen yogurt is tangier. Both soft serve and froyo can be made in a variety of flavors, ice cream too, and the tart flavor can be adjusted with your preference of fruit and other different flavors added.
