January and February are tough months. March, too, depending on where you live. The hangover from the holidays coupled with the cold weather can give anyone the blues. I too, get a little mopey during this time of year, but there are a few things that I do to help lift my spirits, and I thought I would share a few of these ideas with you today, to help beat the winter blues.
How To Beat The Winter Blues With Flowers
Let’s talk flowers. I often write about my love of flowers and flower arranging, and this time of year I go into flower arranging overdrive. Flowers make everyone smile so why not have them placed throughout your home. No need for extravagance, we’re going for color and cheer. A simple gerber daisy in the bathroom can help start anyone’s day on the right foot.
Keeping with that thought, I try to have flowers in places I don’t normally display them; on the table in the foyer next to my keys; on the windowsill by the kitchen sink, and even a small arrangement on my bedside table. Flowers are my favorite way to lift my spirits.
Another one of my ideas to curb the winter blues is to keep busy, and when I say busy, I really mean to organize. Though some spaces and / or closets can seem daunting to tackle, the effort is so well worth it. When I walk in to a space that I recently organized and tidied up, I almost feel rejuvenated. It feels so satisfying to have all my ducks in a row, even if short-lived. The task of organizing keeps my mind busy and my creativity flowing. And too, when a space is clean and organized, it’s almost mind-cleansing and it certainly keeps me from thinking about the doldrums of winter.
Keep up with your favorite hobby, Why not? If it’s something you love to do, then you’re going to feel good doing it or working on it. Collecting, reading, music, whatever the case may be. Sinking in to a good hobby will help banish the blues. As you all know, one of my favorite hobbies is to set the table. It makes me feel good. Just the other night, I was setting the table and I ended up setting one a little extravagant for Taco Tuesday. I decided to embrace the blues and use blues throughout the tablescape, even using a wool scarf for a table runner. I flipped the coin, if you will, and I worked with the blues. I like it so much, I’m going to keep it there for a few more nights.
Winter is a tough time for many. Don’t be bullied by the blues. Sometimes easier said than done, but these three ideas lift my spirits, and a few that I hope will lift yours as well.
