Whenever I hit the flea markets and thrift stores, I have a go-to list of things that I always look for, hoping to find. As you can guess, vintage plates and linens are on the list, and so are concrete planters. I always have my eyes peeled for concrete items to add to my garden, and when I do find them more often than not the price makes me gawk. Because of this I have set out to find the next best thing, and then create the concrete look. Today, I’m going to show you how to create a concrete look with spray paint.
A quick DIY project that can be completed before lunch, it’s really all in the wrist. And, in the paint colors. Rustoleum has several stone surface spray paints available; a grey concrete-y type paint being one of them. At quick glance, concrete is typically grey, but when you look closely, several colors can be pulled and paired with the grey. I don’t want to get all concrete nerdy on you, but when choosing your paint colors, choose an undertone color that complements the concrete look you’re after. In my case here, I chose a deep mossy green.
I found this ceramic planter at the Goodwill for $5. After cleaning it well, I sprayed on a layer of the deep moss and let it dry completely, about 30 minutes. The stone spray paint comes out in full force, so my suggestion is to step back, and spray in short sprays, quickly turning your wrist right and left. If you get too close, you risk the spray paint clumping – too thick of a layer, and you don’t want that. In just a few short, quick sprays, I achieved the concrete look I was after.
The possibilities are endless with this effect. Creating a concrete look with spray paint can be used on just about anything, including plastic. Give it a try. Concrete and plants go together like peas and carrots, so why not add a few concrete-y planters to your garden and porches. It’s a high end look for a low cost.
