Every year we go apple picking. And, every year I insist on picking waaaaaaay more apples than I know what to do with right away.
Of course when we’re out in the orchard picking apples, the last thing I’m thinking about is the daunting task of peeling each and every one. I only have visions of all the recipes I can make using the apples. But alas, of all the pies, crumbles, tarts, dumplings, etc, there’s only so much apple anything one can consume within a couple weeks without capping out.
This is true.
Luckily, I had an a-ha moment a while back to peel, core, cut and prep the apples ahead of time and freeze them until I’m ready to use. Turned out to be one of the best ideas I’ve had. The base of apples, cinnamon, sugar, allspice and flour is really the base for the majority of apple desserts and sauces.
Although I figured out this apple quick tip, I was still facing the task of peeling them, and as you know, this process seems to take forever!! Sure, I could buy one of those special apple peeling gadgets that holds and turns the apple, making peeling easier, but those gizmos are costly. I can’t justify spending a lot on something that only performs one job. I figured what I needed was a drill.
Turns out, I was on to something. When I tried this huge time saving technique, I was able to peel an apple in less than 10 seconds!!
No brainer!
In my DIY Dutchess column this week, I share exactly how you too can peel an apple so quickly, and how you can prep and freeze your apple picks and pull them out when you’re ready to bake!
