Sunday Morning Joe is a new series here at Farmhouse 1820, where I write about things that are in my heart, random happenings, inspiring circumstances, or things that just get me thinking.
I’ve been quiet around here lately. No rhyme or reason, really, just not a whole lot going on. New year, but slow going for me. Are you like this too? Projects are sparse, as they normally are in January. What, with freezing temps outside making it almost impossible to even race out for a quick cut with a power tool. And too, perhaps my juju level is a little low.
Yes, I do have flower arrangements all around, and I continue to set the table with blue hues, yadda, yadda, yadda, but this winter I’m finding I need more. I’ve needed those endorphins to kick in and take away the meh. I need some exercise, and I’m not very good about going to the gym. And at my age too, weight goes on a heck of a lot faster than it goes off.
Have I ever mentioned that we have an elliptical trainer? Well, we do. We’ve had it for years, and it lives in the bedroom that also houses our clothes and other stuff that is waiting for either a proper home or a spring tag sale. Anyway, the elliptical has become a wonderful spot to hang jackets and vests and the occasional wet towel that hasn’t yet made it back to the bathroom. I stubbed my toe on it the other day, because, natch, something was covering the base. Hurt enough for a few choice words to come out of my mouth, but I took this as a sign to clean that machine off and start using it for the reason it’s designed. Exercise releases good endorphins. Good juju. We all know this. Time to start elliptical-ing.
The first day was tough. I huffed and puffed and the 30 minutes felt more like a couple hours. Didn’t seem like my second wind kicked in. Still, when I was finished I can’t say I felt good (I was more like cursing at my age, my weight, and what the heck am I doing), but I felt a small sense of accomplishment. I felt motivated enough to do it again tomorrow.
Five days in and dare I say I’m enjoying the exercise. Though it does take about 10 minutes for my second wind to kick in and for my legs to not feel like they’re dead weights, this elliptical thing starting to do the trick. The experts are right – exercise is good for the body, good for the mind, and good for the juju. Order up another 30 minutes.

Gee thanks Brooke. Your post so tired me out that I had to take a 2 hour nap. But after the nap I felt worse so I went to our basement where we also have an elliptical. I got in about a minute and my legs felt like two rubber bands. Like you the tim went into “slow’ but I’m keeping it up. By damn if you can do it so can I.. All I needed was a swift kick in the keister. I got the kick from you and now I do feel better. Thanks.
