I have been cooking all day. Tis the season!!
As you all know, I do love to cook. It’s an escape for me. But sometimes when I cook a lot of different things in the same day and all the smells mix together, it leaves my nose saying “wwhhhaaaaaa??” So I need to clean the palette, so to speak — of the house..
That’s when this stuff comes in.
Every holiday season growing up, my Mom would simmer this on the stove. We have always fondly called it “Christmas Simmering on the Stove, Good Smelling Stuff.” I’m sure there are many different titles, but this is what sticks in my mind. And I’m keeping it there.
All you do is cut up the ginger, stick in some cinnamon sticks and whole cloves; add some water, and you’re good to go. Simmer on the stove, and keep adding water as it evaporates. You can also add orange peels, whole allspice, and star anise. It all would be great. And this holiday smell will swell in your home. And your house too, will smell terrific!

You inspired me this morning. We had mulled wine a couple of nights ago….house smelled wonderful! I didn’t think to simmer the spices in water for the same effect, so I’m doing so right now. Being stuck in the house today because of the rain (should be snow!) won’t be so bad. Thanks for the idea. I’ll thank your mom too!
