I must admit that my thumb is much greener with my outside plants and gardens than my inside plants. With the exception of my sprouting garden that will be transplanted outside after our last freeze of the season, we only have one plant in our house. A jade.
Growing up, my mama had plants all over our house, and a good share of them were orchids. Her orchids were and are so beautiful, and when I was down in Georgia visiting she and my Dad, I asked her how she takes care of her orchids and how she keeps them all looking so beautiful.
Enter today’s Quick Tip Friday.
Mama’s rule of green orchid thumb is to water the orchids with ice cubes. Three (3) per plant, Of course since ice cubes come in different sizes, the ice should melt down to a 1/4 cup of water. Also, orchids like to have their roots exposed. You can place loose bark on top, or you can let them appear in all their glory.
The point of using ice cubes is that they melt slowly, releasing the water in a slow drip. Place ice cubes on the orchid once a week, and you’ll have beautiful orchids and beautiful blooms.
This has been Mama’s practice for years and years, and it hasn’t failed her yet. Give it a try. Orchid you smart!
