There’s something to be said so early in the season when the mind and the eyes need a bit of a reprieve. The energy and the verge are infectious indeed, but at the same time a respite is craved in order to just keep up. This point is familiar to many and for me, today offered up a little quiet. I turned to a project that I always enjoy doing, and that’s floral arranging. I grabbed the clippers and basket, and headed out to the yard with the likes of holiday greenery on my mind. Here are a few things you can find in your yard (or your neighbor’s) to inspire a holiday arrangement, or two.
Texture is the key to beauty in arrangements and my focus was greenery, and lots of it. I headed straight to the pine trees. The different varieties pony up varying lengths of needles, and while I was at it, I picked up a few pine cones because let’s face it, I’m a sucker for those things. I trimmed a few branches from the boxwoods, and the holly always has me at hello. All of the ingredients needed for a couple holiday arrangements.
Back inside, I pulled out some silver ornaments that I’ve had for years. Scattered in an ice bucket with a few sprigs of boxwood mixed in here and there, making sure to stop at “just right” and not overdo. A festive holiday vignette full of texture and sparkle, now living as a centerpiece on the dining room table.
An old wooden tool box that I found at my favorite salvage shop a few years ago is cool lookin’ in its own right, and all the dividers scream for this thing to become the home of an arrangement of any kind. With the help of a couple poinsettias and a couple tiny pine plants, I started loading in the greenery. I filled in where needed with pine cones and textures. For a little unexpected razzle dazzle, I stuck in a couple glitter pine trees that I got at the dollar section at Target last year, and a glittered reindeer is ready for takeoff.
Do you have a few leftover clippings that you don’t want to go to waste? Then gather them together and attach them to a wreath form or, better yet and if you have them, a pair of old snowshoes. Heck, hang an old sleigh and attach the spray to that.
As I’ve said before, no rules apply when you’re creating your own arrangement. You add what you like, keeping the textures intriguing. Water as needed, and even a spritz with a spray bottle will keep the arrangements fresh. To change things up, rearrange or even simply move it to another room.
Take a minute, and take a walk outside. Forge. The ingredients for a beautiful holiday arrangement, or two, is right outside in your backyard, or close by.
