For an old house, we have an impressive amount of storage. Every room has a closet and although I don’t believe that closets were really a thing in 1820, I’d like to give a round of applause to whomever built in the closets in this old farmhouse. Carrie Bradsaw closets, they are not, but with the right products and design, I’m upping the glam factor in these little storage nooks.
When I attended the DIY bloggers conference, Haven, this past summer, CedarSafe© had a booth. I stopped by to check out their product and to share my blog with them. I walked away loving their product all with high hopes to work with them and to one day install CedarSafe© in a couple of our closets, primarily our coat closet.
Bringing you up to speed to present day, and I got my wish. CedarSafe© sent me cedar planks to install in our coat closet; a closet that had a smell combination of moth balls, a little bit musty, and a few random old house scents. Not to mention that the ceiling in the coat closet was peeling. Bottom line, the closet needed a makeover.
I started with a clean slate. I removed all of the coats and paired them down. Edited out the ones that we don’t wear anymore and sent them off to Goodwill. With everything out of the closet, I was able to start installing the cedar planks. I used a nail gun with 2 inch nails; a size recommended for plaster and lath walls. If you are installing with drywall, 1 1/2 inch nails can be used. No nail gun? No problem. CedarSafe© planks can be installed with wood glue or liquid nails.
Here is what I love about CedarSafe©: So easy to install. Each plank is grooved and notched so they fit together snuggly. A chop saw makes cutting a cinch, but even if you don’t have a chop saw, a smaller wood saw works well too. Easy to work with, the boards don’t come super long, nor super short. Not cumbersome.
The only challenge I faced was the sloped walls and the expected unleveled everything. But the CedarSafe© boards covered all that. I got completely geeked out when I was working on this project. To me, it was a fun puzzle to put together. And easy. These boards can be installed by even one who doesn’t get their DIY groove on often. All in, this project took me 7 hours to complete, and that’s including a few Instagram breaks and taking in a few phone calls.
It’s like we have a whole new closet. And we do. The cedar smell is so welcomed, and too, I no longer have to worry about moths or any other wool-loving pest. A much added value to this storage real estate.
Do you have a closet that needs some attention? Then take my word and install CedarSafe©. It’ll be the best closet choice you’ll ever make!!
