Kitchen renovating can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. And, not everything needs to be changed. All you need is a little creative inspiration and these budget-friendly, high impact ideas for your kitchen makeover.
I loved sharing with you my complete kitchen makeover reveal, and I’m so grateful for all of the positive feedback! I received a lot of sourcing questions along with several comments from readers wanting more! So I thought I would put together a detailed blog post along with a video for y’all, showing you a few projects (some take a weekend and some take an afternoon) and all of them are inexpensive alternatives to the expensive changes you see in so many magazine kitchens.
Let’s get into it!
10 Budget Friendly Kitchen Updates With High Impact
1. PAINT THE CABINETS AND THE WALLS
Cabinets are one of the highest ticketed items in the kitchen. The cost to change them out is enormous, but you can change the face of them very inexpensively, by painting them. Even if you have the ugliest cabinets on the planet in your kitchen, I guarantee that they’ll look 1000 times better when painted. In fact, they’ll look like totally new cabinets.
Can I share a secret with you?
I’m not a fan of our cabinets. I never have been. But, new ones haven’t been in our budget since we moved into the 1820, so I’ve improvised by painting them. They’ve grown on me more and more with each color I’ve painted them, and this last improvement is my favorites.
Depending on the amount of cabinets you have in your kitchen, this update will most likely cost you just one gallon of paint.
2. UPDATE THE CABINET HARDWARE
After all, the cabinet hardware is the jewelry of the kitchen. So update it! It can make your cabinets look high end without the high end price tag.
I collaborated with Amerock with our kitchen cabinet update, and the quality of their cabinet knobs and drawer pulls are top notch, and once installed, the hardware made our kitchen cabinets look so high end! My goal was for a clean and classic yet a sturdy design, and the Appoint collection in champagne bronze from Amerock is nothing short of GORGEOUS!
3. ADD A CLASSIC BACKSPLASH
One of the most asked questions from my kitchen reveal video was “Where can I find your backsplash?”
Backing up just a sec, one thing I never thought to be so personal, is a kitchen backsplash. When we moved in to the 1820, there was no backsplash. And we lived with that for years. I couldn’t commit. I was like George Clooney before he met Amal. But when I saw this stunning tile that turned out to be everything I wanted in a tile – marble, quartz with the warmth of brass mixed in – well, it had me at hello.
It’s called “Dreamcicle” and it’s amazing! All the classic elements in a modern design.
4. CHANGE OUT THE SINK FAUCET
This is a great update at a low cost. No sense in spending armloads of money on a faucet when there’s so many beautiful options that are affordable! This is the one we bought on Amazon when we installed our old/new-to-us sink 7 years ago. We love it and it is still working like a champ. Classic bridge design that updates the 1920’s sink. A win win.
5. UPDATE THE COUNTERTOPS
Although this may sound daunting, this project could be done in a weekend.
Are you stuck with ugly formica countertops that may your kitchen look way beyond outdated? Well, did you know that you can apply a concrete finish over top? You sure can! Don’t ever discount the amount of value countertops can add to your home. This is another weekend warrior project you can do that reaps all the benefits of a gorgeous updated kitchen! Here’s a great DIY for you to check out.
6. BATTERY OPERATED SCONCES FOR THE WIN
This is the most amazing upgrade for the value! No need to hire an electrician to tear open walls to run power to a sconce there are so many beautiful battery operated ones that will bring in high impact, and light, to your kitchen! These are the ones we have in our kitchen, and they are amazing!!!
7. BRING ON THE RUGS!
I’m a firm believer that every room needs a rug! The kitchen is no different. To bring in added warmed and color to our kitchen, I picked this rug to do the job. The design isn’t one that would be expected in a kitchen, but totally works. And that was my goal. It hides those inevitable spills and cleans up like a dream. And the best part is that it’s very affordable!!
8. HARDWOOD LAMINATE IS YOUR FRIEND!
And a very affordable solution when changing out your kitchen floor! When we moved in to the 1820, the flooring was a ridiculously ugly linoleum tile that would look right at home in a government office rather than our kitchen. So, we took matters in our own hands, with our budget in mind of course, and installed the laminate flooring right on top of that ugly linoleum. And the best part?! It took us only two hours to complete the job.
9. KEEP KNIVES WITHIN REACH
Knives and spoons are the most used utensils in the kitchen. This is a fact, and certainly one that holds true in our kitchen. So why not keep things easy on yourself and keep your knives close at hand. This one is a great option to install near the food prep area that also keeps those sharp objects out of reach of curious young’uns.
And last, but certainly not least….
10. KEEP YOUR PREP AREA ON POINT
I’m talking about adding a cutting board to your countertops for easy prep, or even a marble slab for a great prep surface for all of your baking. A cutting board is a MUST in the kitchen, and if taken care of, will last for years. I recommend this one.
And for those that love to bake, a marble slab is so important to roll out dough and to keep things cool that need to stay that temp. This one would make a great addition to your kitchen! Both options are beautiful additions to your kitchen, but can fit in to a tight budget. Lots of return on investment here because cutting boards are long lasting, and only get better with age.
