There are a few things about this house that has our heads shaking in confusion. Not sure why the previous owners made such odd decisions, but obviously seemed right to them.
Case in point is the fireplace in the living room. It is covered up, and filled with concrete.
I know, right?!
And when we moved in, the front was wallpapered and there was a random electrical outlet attached in front. Even more odd.
There could be many reasons why this fireplace is covered up. And, it could be a big debacle when we decide to, and have the budge for, uncovering the opening, and checking out the chimney. But in the meantime, I had to get rid of the random wallpaper placement, and give the fireplace a little dignity until it can become of use again.
I first placed some old crocks and drift wood in front of it, but all that stuff got in the way, and we kept tripping on the props. I needed to do something with that concrete fill. I needed to work with what I had.
Then one day when I had the chop saw out, some wood branches caught my eye, and I got the brainstorm to cut the branches in to slices and affix them to the fireplace. I figured at least then, it would kind of resemble a fireplace, and the wood slices would fit in.
So, I cut and cut until I had enough slices. Then I fit them on the “wall?” and affixed with liquid nails.
As far as non-working-covered-up fireplaces go, this fix-up was a good temporary solution. And, looks a heck of a lot better than wallpaper.
When the time is right, we are considering a gas insert. I love the idea of turning on the fire via remote control, and it still gives off a little heat and ambiance. But I would love all of your opinions. What do you think about gas inserts? Any you could recommend?
