I would like to go down on record and say that fall is my favorite time of year. Crisp mornings bring warmish afternoons, and the cheerful colors undoubtedly stop me in my tracks. Sweaters with shorts and wrapping up in a blanket by the campfire, I love to bring this vibe inside and have every room look as vibrant as the season makes me feel. I love decorating for fall.
My rule of thumb for fall decorating is to mix old with new, living with dried, textures and finishes; a broad measure, but a design inspiration to go by, and I love to decorate in vignettes. A vignette is really just a fancy word for a grouping, and what better way to show off the season than displaying these vibrant groups around you home. A container isn’t always necessary when creating a vignette, but certainly a good starting point. Oranges, plums, browns, oh my! Bring on the color. Mums and fall go together like peas and carrots, so naturally, these cheerful plants are a must. Along with a trio of autumnal plants, hearty squashes have a long shelf life and can be arranged in the mix as well.
Embrace the faux. There are a lot of flowers out there now that look real, and pair nicely with dried. I have a wicker cornucopia that I bring out every year and each year, I fill it with different fall decor. This year, I’ve chosen some faux lavender flowers, and I have them spraying out on the bottom. I started layering from there, adding a dried gourd, some wheat, dried eucalyptus and topping with a big brown bow.
Several mums are in and around, and I’ve brought out a medley of containers to house them in. Old pickle crock, an umbrella basket, and a galvanized bucket. I decided to embrace the tarnish on a trophy and the mum it holds looks right at home.
I’ve filled an old tool box with a few fall plants as well, along with more dried flowers and a couple grocery store squashes. Little bits of fall decor that go a long way and will carry through Thanksgiving. And even better, all of the fall decor can be rearranged and transferred from room to room to keep things looking fresh and fancy. Not overdone, but just right.
Bring the outside in and celebrate the vibrancy of fall. Coming soon, a lot of pumpkins. Stay tuned.
