Mac is a runner. Cross country has his heart, but he is also on the track team where he prefers distance rather than hurdles. Lord knows the kid has had to jump a few in his life (for those of you that are new on the scene, I shared Mac’s story here). Now in high school, Mac has an amazing coach. A guy that prefers to be called simply by his last name, he is far from warm and fuzzy, but certainly not a prick. An outstanding coach. His motto: Stay the course.
Stay the course. Three powerful words that are so poignant right now. And, always really. But it’s these words that have spoken to my heart, and are keeping me redirected when I get in a slump. Arnett sends daily workouts and direction via one of those group apps, and within his posts, he shares historical testimony and motivation, and he always closes his posts with “stay the course.”
Isolation is a weird thing. For someone who was craving some downtime and wishing my husband was home more, well, I’ve got all that and then some. Our phone notifications are going off like a random symphony; I’ve realized that my math skills don’t go beyond basic, and that there really is a such thing as asparagus pee. Times four. Too much information, yes, but that’s what makes isolation so weird. 24/7 of all of us under one roof is a lot of information. So, I venture to my office, sit at my design table and try to stay the course.
It’s these words that come to mind when I lie awake at night. Thinking about my dreams, my goals, projects I want to work on, and a business I’m trying to launch, the pandemic has slowed things, but not stopped them. I’ve designed inspiration boards. Drawn sketches. And when I’m not busy washing my hands every few minutes, I’m working with them. I’ve surrounded myself with color, for motivation, inspiration, and perseverance. Stay the course.
So for now, we’re holding off on asparagus. We’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s ok to close a door for a little personal space. It’s so very hard to stay motivated, and hold onto any positive juju that you have in the tank, but my friends, we’ve got to Stay The Course. And then maybe turn to broccoli.
