Last week was pretty interesting. Being the first full week of the new year it started off ok, but then kinda went downhill.
I am an eternal optimist. My intentions are always genuine, and my heart is always true. So with my diet lasting exactly 2 days, that didn’t really seem to matter. I thought that would be the only negative on the week. After all, what’s one helping of mac and cheese??
But early Thursday morning, around 2:30, we lost power. The temps outside hovered around minus 5 degrees and more frustrating, only our side of the street lost power. Our neighbors across the street and behind us still had power.
We made do. We started a fire in the fireplace, and made sure the kids had extra covers while they slept. (they were completely unaffected, by the way). The power came back on around 11 that morning, and all was feeling right again.
Fast forward to Friday. The kids had a snow day from school, so we were home and trying to conquer a few chores. But then the Little Miss came running to me screaming that the den was flooding.
I dropped everything and raced to the den.
@!**#!$.
Water was pouring out of the pipe in several places. The pipes had burst. My mind was racing. I didn’t know what to do first.
Call Sean.
Take photos for insurance.
Grab towels.
Shut the water off.
Turn the furnace off.
Throw my pill box hat out the window and scream profanities.
I did all of that.
Then all kinds of things entered my mind like cost, damage, clean-up, future repercussions. And I was overwhelmed. My collected self had escaped.
Sean came right home from work and we both thought we could fix the problem ourselves. But then we quickly realized that it would be like the blind leading the blind. A call to the plumber and an hour later, the holes in the pipes were getting addressed.
I swear by our plumber. He works swiftly and precisely. And, he’s honest.
And Friday night, John of Dolphin Plumbing was our best friend.
He whipped out all of his plumbing gadgets and got to work.
Our pipe is fixed (in 4 places) and the cleanup began immediately. With the help of a few fans, the rug has dried out and is ready to be cleaned.
So, onward to week 2. And I’m raising a glass to all things positive.
