The third major project in my May Makeover series is finally here! Today is the day! Here is our back porch makeover and reveal!
One of my greatest strengths is the ability to picture a finished room in my head before the makeover has even begun. It’s a gift I never take for granted and one I am so very grateful for. Though I think and day dream and think some more over designs, it’s all of these thought processes that give me this ability to create exactly what’s in my mind’s eye. Thinking about design and actually creating it, puts me in my happy place. This is when I’m in my element and when I’m feeling at peace.
Do you like to putter? You know, just kinda do little things and hone in on the fine details?
I do.
I love to putter.
I’m perfectly happy puttering around after most of the major work has been completed on a project, tending to all the details, and ensuring everything is exactly in its place; where I want it to be and where it was originally in my mind’s eye. Creating a pretty tablesetting, divvying up the pillows so each bench has the best pairings, creating seating areas and lighting features; balancing out pops of color. It’s all about puttering around. And I could do this all day long because really, I’ve puttered these designs in my mind for months. It helps me to get my brain to shift; decompress, and it challenges me to create.
And that truly makes me happy.
Our back porch makeover and reveal is the third major project in my May Makeover series, and though I honestly loved working on each project; from our primary bedroom, and then our dining room, this reveal may just be the most dramatic. One could say that the before and after is a total 360.
I shared the easiest and best way to paint a porch, and honestly, I couldn’t have completed our back porch makeover without the help of this power paint sprayer. The simple fact that the porch went from white to a lighter black in one coat with the paint sprayer, says it all. It saved time, it saved money, and it looks amazing. I felt like a professional using it, and it looks like a professional painted our back porch. None can be the wiser.
As I mentioned before, our back porch has had lots of changes since we moved into the 1820; some minor and some do earn an accolade or two. I painted a faux rug and published the photo without straightening the lamp shade…
I actually taught myself to sew a hem, and I made striped curtain panels, yet apparently felt fine with a wrinkled rug…
Our Back Porch Makeover And Reveal
But this makeover project takes the cake!
It’s chic.
It’s dramatic.
It’s a stunning mix of modern and traditional.
It’s a beautiful design twist and welcomed to the unexpected.
It’s tranquil.
Here is what our back porch looked like a couple months after we moved in to the 1820.
And here is what it looks like now!
Dramatic, sophisticated and timeless. The black with the pops of chartreuse compliment the entire design of our back porch, along with the added wood elements.
The birch branches were given to me by my dear friends. They bring in a lovely nature element and also bring balance to the wall.
I love to create sitting areas, so I did just that on both ends of our back porch. Here, I took two wicker chairs that have always been here, and brightened them up with that pop of chartreuse spray paint, and added decorative pillows, because really, pillows are a necessity on chairs.
This chair I found on Marketplace for $20. I believe it’s originally from Pottery Barn, and all I did was give it a new coat of stain to give it new life. This might be my new favorite spot to sit and relax; put my feet up and read.
The benches work double duty as storage and seating. Why not make them look like couches. More pillows for the win.
The table and chairs have been a back porch staple, even at our old house. Every 10 years or so, I’ll give them a coat of flat black spray paint to keep the set on the up and up. The cushions have been changed more often, and this time I opted for a sailcloth color. The grasscloth rug underneath helps create its own special dining area.
With all of the tucked in spots and weird angles of this porch, the original thought of painting it was daunting. Collaborating with Wagner SprayTech, the Control Pro 190 paint sprayer was my lifesaver. It is, hands down, the best paint sprayer for big jobs like this, turning our back porch from drab to FAB!
Our back porch is now everything I envisioned, and has become even more relaxing. A true respite. Check out our back porch makeover and reveal video!
